UNISON and the RCN nurses' union have expressed support for new measures to try to tackle violence against health workers. The Association of Chief Police Officers has agreed a number of measures with the NHS security management agency. The police say they will investigate every reported incident of violence or abuse and will encourage the courts to take a stronger line against offenders.

The VIDA services union has backed a government initiative to better enforce minimum pay rates in collective agreements and other employment rights. The proposal is in preparation for the full opening up of the Austrian labour market to the rest of the EU in 2011 and concern about social dumping. The union says that migrant workers in some border areas are already being paid 40% below the rate in the relevant collective agreement and tougher measures are needed to ensure that employers pay the negotiated rates. The Vårdförbundet and Kommunal health and care unions have negotiated new and stricter rules on working time that will ensure workers have the right to proper rest time and in particular meet the requirement for 11 hours consecutive rest every 24 hours set by the Working Time Directive. The negotiations with the SKR and Sobona employer organisations took place following criticism from the European Commission that existing provisions did not ensure compliance with the Directive.
