Unions have been disappointed after the third round of collective bargaining in the municipal sector. The employers have made no offer of a pay rise for 2013 or 2014 and nor have they taken up the unions' proposals for increasing youth employment in the sector. The employers claim that local government workers will see their pay rise by 2% but the unions point out that this is only a net pay rise resulting from lower pension contributions which are linked with a deterioration in the pension scheme.

Local government strike action suspended
The planned one-day local government strike in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on 14 October was called off and further action suspended while the trade unions consult with their members over an improved offer from the employers. The offer includes pay increases ranging from 8.56% for the lowest paid to 2.2% for those on higher pay scales. The increases would take effect from 1 January 2015 while there would be lump sum payments of between £100 (€125) and £325 (€410) in December 2014, again with the higher amounts for the lower paid. Unions suspend consultations in local authorities
The FNV Abvakabo and CNV Publieke Zaak public service trade unions have suspending consultations with certain local authorities in the latest stage of their dispute with the VNG municipal employers’ organisation. Negotiations over a new collective agreement broke down last year but there was hope of further negotiations at the beginning of this year. However, these broke down again in February with the employers unwilling to offer a decent pay increase or make concessions on the union’s demands for employment security. Firefighters suspend strike as local government action set to start
SIPTU members employed in the Retained Fire Service have suspended their industrial action following an intervention of the Labour Court that has decided that there is a basis for a full hearing on the dispute. This is due to take place on 26 June. The union foresees some tough discussions and says that members will not settle for anything other than an agreement which safeguards the functioning of this vital emergency service into the future.
