A new report from the ETUI reveals the holes in the arguments of those who maintain that Latvia proves that austerity can get an economy out of recession. This policy brief argues the opposite and shows that what actually happened in Latvia is that policymakers decided not to continue but to break with the policy of austerity. This made it possible for Latvia to get out of a vicious spiral of austerity causing a depression and thereby leading to even more austerity.

Report reveals failure of rehabilitation at work
The Kommunal local government union has published a report exposing the poor performance of employers in the sector when it comes to rehabilitation. According to the survey only one in 10 workers return to work after injury thanks to rehabilitation services provided by employers and only 15% of employers adapt work for workers. Kommunal believes that there should be sanctions applied against employers who fail to provide adequate rehabilitation services. Union reports reveal failure of labour reforms
Both the UGT and CCOO trade union confederations have produced reports revealing the failure of the government's labour law reforms over the past year. The UGT points out that employment fell by 822000 in 2012 and, in fact, fell more sharply in 2012 than in 2009 in the depth of the crisis. The confederation argues that there is an urgent need to boost economic activity not reform labour law. The CCOO assessment attacks the reforms to collective bargaining and employment protection legislation which it says have created more conflict and disputes.
