Hungarian unions focus on building union power

Budapest recruitment seminar

Over 30 participants from trade unions across the public services took part in a two-day training seminar on recruitment and organising in Budapest on 17-18 January.

EPSU has been working with a number of its Hungarian affiliates over the past three years, providing them with support, advice and training to help boost their recruitment and organising work. This latest seminar introduced a mixed group of activists - some new and some old - to the key debates around developing strategies and designing and implementing recruitment and organising campaigns.

Leading the seminar was Adam Rogalewski who has many years of experience in recuitment and organising in Poland, Switzerland and the UK. He introduced the main sessions and, in particular, got participants thinking through all the different factors that they needed to take account of in planning and carrying out a recruitment campaign.

The seminar coincided with a major union campaign in Hungary against the government's decision to change working time rules. The "anti-slave law" campaign provided an important opportunity for trade unions to reach out to workers and participants discussed how they were preparing for the upcoming national demonstration.
