Scottish council employers have increased their pay offer for this year from 2.5% to 3.0% and UNISON and the GMB have suspended a planned third day of action so that it can consult with their members. Meanwhile there is no progress in the dispute over the agreement covering local government workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Unions have called on the ACAS arbitration service to intervene to help secure a settlement.

Unions call for revised offer for local government workers
UNISON is urging local councillors to put pressure on the local government employers' organisation to come up with an improved offer. The initial offer was for 1% increase with changes to conditions or a 1% increase for lower paid workers and 0.6% for higher paid. The union says the offer is wholly inadequate and fails to go any way towards compensating for the effective 16% fall in real pay over the past three years' pay freeze. Health unions vote for revised pay offer
Health unions have voted to accept the government's revised pay offer for NHS employees. Unions had been considering industrial action in response to the government's decision to stage the 2.5% pay award, paying 1.5% in April 2007 followed by 1% in November. Local government unions reject pay offer
The three main unions in local government - Unison, Unite and GMB - have rejected a 2% pay rise as a wholly inadequate offer from the employers. The unions have submitted a joint pay claim that aims to provide some redress for years of pay freezes and below-inflation increases. These have left local government workers some 22% worse off in real terms. The aim is for a new minimum rate of GBP 10 (EUR 12) per hour and a 10% increase for all workers.
