Firefighters want action to improve services

Firefighters' unions in Spain and Italy are calling for government action to address a number of longstanding issues.  In Italy the FP-CGIL trade union has declared a state of agitation around a number of key demands related to the collective agreement, recruitment, occupational safety, pensions and the right to elect workplace representatives. The union wants to see action to reduce bureaucracy and increase investment. Meanwhile, in Spain the unions want a framework law to establish a clear national structure for the service which is characterised by significant differences across the regions. The FSC-CCOO mobilising for a demonstration on 26 October to highlight the demand.

Unions want improved offer from employers

The GPA-djp and PRO-GE trade unions are currently consulting among their works council members in the electricity sector over how to respond to the employers' inadequate offer in the latest bargaining round. On the table is a pay increase of 2.4% for those earning up to €3500 a month, tapering down to 2% for the highest earners. The unions argue that the offer is inadequate both in relation to workers' productivity and in comparison to what company directors have been getting. Public service federations want government action on pay and conditions

The public service federations of the CCOO confederation have called on the government to confirm the pay increase for 2020 as agreed and to undertake major negotiations over a range of issues including the re-establishment of rights and benefits frozen or removed as a result of austerity measures. The federations underline the need to stabilise employment and tackle the excessive levels of temporary work. They also say that long-standing issues relating to public employment, job classification, career development and equality need to be addressed.

Unions want action on long-term decline in pay

The FBU firefighters' union has expressed disappointment that the employers' organisation has failed to provide a response to the union's pay claim that was submitted in early June. The union is looking for an immediate and substantial increase in pay to take account of 10 years of pay freezes and below-inflation increases. Meanwhile, the main civil service union, PCS, has launched a campaign on pay with the aim also of securing a pay increase that will begin to restore pay levels after a similar period when pay has been frozen or kept inflation.
