EPSU joins demands for meaningful debate and decision on European Citizens’ Initiatives in European Parliament

European Parliament, make the ECI work! #EPForgetUsNot

(8 June 2018) EPSU joined with other organisers of European Citizens’ Initiatives and democracy campaigners to demand important changes to the EU regulation covering the European Citizens Initiative.

The European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO) will cast a vote of crucial importance for the future of these ECI’s on 20 June.

We want the European Parliament to take its responsibility for this participatory instrument. It should be obliged to debate and vote on every single successful ECI in plenary before the Commission adopts its formal response. With supporting the Right2Water initiative we have experienced how important this step is to ensure that the outcome of the ECI is fully debated and respected.
