(15 June 2020) The European economy has been severely impacted as a consequence of the measures to contain the spread of the pandemic. Unemployment is rapidly rising and economic growth has been negative. The ETUC is demanding a rapid recovery plan in the European Union to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and to use the crisis to move towards a more socially just and environmentally sustainable economy. To convince European government leaders the ETUC Executive Committee (9 June) agreed a day of action on the 18th of June. The day of action is to put pressure on the Member States and the European Council (19th) to adopt such plans. The ETUC Executive Committee adopted its platform for this day.
Other issues that were addressed at the Executive Committee included:
- an EU funding instrument for Social Partners - a continuity and recovery fund. ETUC is consulting its affiliates
- ETUC resolution on European Green Deal initiatives
- Position of the ETUC for revision of the Employment guidelines
The ETUC Executive Committee took place 9 June, online. EPSU vice-Presidents Francoise Geng and Thomas Kattnig, and the EPSU GS and Deputy General Secretary participated.
