Health union calls for change in return-to-work protocol

The CCOO-Sanidad health service union has repeated its call on the government to change the protocol on discharging health workers from treatment for COVID-19 and returning to work. The union argues that the procedure should be no different to that applying to other workers and that it is essential to ensure that health workers have completely recovered from infection. It warns that pressure to get health staff back to work has contributed to the 19400 health worker infections and 13 deaths. The federation has called for medical students in the final year of their studies to be called up to provide support if there are urgent staff shortages. The union estimates that this could provide an additional 6500 doctors and 12500 nursing and other professional staff. The FeSP-UGT federation has also raised concerns about infection of health staff and continuing problems with the supply of personal protective equipment and testing.

ETUC calls for immediate action on social protocol

At its mid-term conference in Paris on 27 May the ETUC agreed to write to the Council of Ministers to ask immediate action to introduce a social protocol to protect fundamental social rights. The ETUC demand is part of its campaign in response to the threat to social dialogue and collective bargaining from the European Court judgements of Viking, Laval, Rüffert and Luxembourg. Health and safety body endorses union's protocol on tackling violence

The UGT confederation has developed procedures for workplace action to deal with bullying and violence. The union has brought together research on the subject with practical examples and information from collective agreements and the procedure aims at both preventing and responding to violence and harassment. The protocol has been endorsed by the national health and safety body, the INSHT, which has issued guidance on dealing with violence and harassment at work. Health union calls for end to recruitment freeze

The INMO nurses’ and midwives’ union has called on the Health Service Executive (HSE) to end the moratorium on recruiting frontline patient-facing staff. The HSE has revealed that emergency department attendances are up 13% compared to the same period in 2023 and 452 patients were admitted to hospital without a bed on a single day earlier this month.
