Four trade union organisations - CGT, FO, FSU and Solidaires - are joining with two student organisations - UNEF and UNL - in a national demonstration and strike action on 19 March focusing on pay, social protection and a range of other key demands. The unions want negotiations across the sectors for a general pay rise along with an increase to the national minimum wage.

Unions take student initiative
In a new initiative to improve recruitment of younger workers, the SKTF local government union and ST civil service union have joined with the HTF private sector salaried workers union to form Tria, a new organisation for students. The 17,000 student members of the three unions will be transferred to Tria which is hiring 50 students to help organise local activities and provide employment-related information and advice to students. Student nurses face "slave labour"
The latest austerity plans from the Department of Health include a proposal to phase out payments to studesnt nurses. Currently they are paid 80% of the minimum of a qualified nurse when they are on work placements. If the plans go ahead this will be reduced to 40% by 2014 and then phased out completely.
