Public debt crises happen more often than we think and including in developed countries. It means that a government can no longer service its debt payments.

Aug. 31, 2017 An analysis by the European Trade Union Institute shows that wage convergence between East and West in Europe was steady up until 2008. However, since then the trend has either stalled or gone into reverse. Taking national average pay as a percentage of the average across the pre-2004 EU15, Croatia and Hungary show the largest increase in the pay gap since 2008. There were also increases in Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland and Romania.Most progress was made in Bulgaria but from a very low level (11.8%) to 17.7%, still less than a fifth of average pay in the West.
Jul. 07, 2017 (July 2017) The energy workers' union has achieved a significant victory in negotiating a new collective agreement covering the Narva power plants in Eastern Estonia after the company had indicated that it wanted to end collective bargaining. The union managed to retain all existing rights and benefits as well as negotiate a 3.5% pay increase backdated to 1 March 2017. The pay deal covers this year while the collective agreement overall runs until the end of 2018.
Apr. 19, 2017 (April 2017) The Estonian energy workers' union organised a picket of the Eesti Energia power company on 18 April supported by the EAKL trade union confederation and several other trade unions. The protest was over the threat by the company to end collective agreements and leave workers on legal minimum standards. The company also wants to consolidate various payments into the basic salary and effectively end collective bargaining. The union has also called on the public conciliation office to intervene and help resolve the dispute. Further information is in the attached union statement.
Feb. 14, 2013 The Estonian Supreme Court has ruled that two Estonian workers employed in Finland should have benefited from local pay and conditions. The two were paid only €8 an hour when local rates were between €10.30 and €11.30. Their employers also refused to pay overtime rates. Nov. 26, 2012 Unions representing doctors and health workers agreed on pay increases, reduced workloads and new working time arrangements at the end of October after lengthy strike action. From 1 March 2013 pay for nurses will increase by 17.5% and for doctors by 11%. Mar. 13, 2012 EPSU affiliates have been supporting the campaign of industrial action called by the EAKL trade union confederation. Transport workers have been at the forefront of the strike over changes to the laws on collective bargaining and employment contracts while teachers have also been taking separate strike action over their demand for a 20% pay increase. May. 06, 2011 The ROTAL trade union will submit a claim for an 8% pay increase for police and rescue workers next year which would bring their salaries back to 2009 levels. Mar. 22, 2011 Workers at the Narva power plant are planning possible strike action in support of their pay claim. The union is calling for pay increases of around 25% and for salaries in future to be linked to increases in prices. The union argues that pay has not been increased for three years while prices have been rising and the company has seen profits increase. Jul. 21, 2010 Researchers, equality experts and even government officials have acknowledged the difficulties in closing the gender pay gap in Estonia. While equality legislation exists, the difficulty is in implementing it and the challenge facing women who want to pursue an equal pay case. The equality commissioner says that only five women have made an official complaint under the legislation in the last seven years despite the scale of the gender pay gap in the country. Jun. 18, 2009 Energy and transport workers were among those demonstrating or striking on 16 June in protest at the government’s plans to weaken employee protection through changes to the law on employment contracts. Union demands also included improvements to redundancy compensation and unemployment benefit. Around 300 workers at the Eesti energy company took part in the action.
