New Publication ETUI: Workers’ Rights and the EU take-over directive

(6 October 2016) Many public service workers are employed by private employers. Some of these employers are multinational companies like in health, energy, water, waste, security services or other.  They will be confronted with take-overs. Recent examples are the take-overs by the health care giant Fresenius of clinics in Germany and more recently the whole chain of Quirón Salud in Spain. Take-overs often lead to restructuring, new management and different working methods. Working conditions can be effected. It can also lead to mass dismissals. Ensuring that workers have a voice during such take-overs and that their rights are protected is therefore crucial.

A new publication of the ETUI explains in detail what workers’ rights are and how crucial it is to receive timely and full information about the planned takeover and to intervene at an early stage of the takeover process. The book concludes that the EU Takeover Bids Directive needs to be revised, as it does not provide an adequate level of workers’ rights in its current form.
