Once again Europe has been hit by another deadly attack. EPSU joined the entire European trade union movement in offering our condolences and solidarity to the victims of the Nice attack, their loved ones and, indeed the entire people of France. Our thoughts are also, as always at these times, with our colleagues in the emergency and medical services. Barely a day later, across the other side of the continent, a coup was launched against the elected government of Turkey. Any attempt to subvert democracy like this must be unequivocally condemned. At the same time, we look with growing concern at the mass arrests in the country; the government’s response must also respect the rule of law and Turkey’s democratic institutions. EPSU signed a press release with Friends of the Earth and the European Anti-Poverty Network condemning the Commission’s proposal to provisionally apply the controversial EU-Canada trade deal (CETA) before national parliaments can have their say. Meanwhile, the ETUC has met in London to discuss the ongoing crises produced by the UK’s vote to leave the EU. In both cases our message is clear, social rights and protection for workers must come before narrow economic interests. Read on to find out more!
