UK Firefighters’ Union send letter of solidarity to colleagues battling floods across Europe

(8 June 2016) Natural disasters know no borders but neither does trade union solidarity. General Secretary of UK Fire Brigades Union, Matt Wrack, has written a letter to EPSU and firefighter unions expressing the solidarity of UK firefighters with their brothers and sisters across Europe.

A wave of flooding has hit the continent bringing danger and destruction to many areas. It is with great sadness that we learn of the deaths of members of the public and the firefighter who died in the town of Schwaebisch Gmuend while trying to rescue a flood victim.

EPSU would like to thank the FBU, on behalf of firefighters across Europe, for their words of solidarity. We would like to add our own expression of support for colleagues battling these floods and our condolences to the families of those who have so tragically lost their lives.

Matt is right when he says that the increased risk of flooding due to climate change calls for a coordinated response at local, national and European level. EPSU will continue its work, with the FBU and firefighters’ unions across Europe, to make the case for more investment and better health and safety.
