Unions representing tax workers organised a demonstration on 18 July and are planning further action in September over pay differences in the inland revenue. Unions argue that there is too big a pay gap between tax inspectors and other workers and that the pay structure needs to be revised to create a fairer system. They also argue that opportunities for career progression also need to be more open to all employees in the service.

Firefighters protest over careers, pensions and working time
The STAL and STML unions representing firefighters organised a protest in Lisbon on 16 April outside the Interior Ministry. The main concerns for the unions are about government proposals to reform the career structure for firefighters and to reduce retirement benefits. Other issues relate to payments for oncall time, 12-hour shifts and implementation of a pay structure that the two unions negotiated with the ministry. The unions have been frustrated by the government's reluctance to negotiate, delaying and then postponing a meeting due on 2 April.
National day of action over pay and careers
The Common Front of the Public Administration Unions has announced a national day of action on 20 May to push the government to respond to its key collective bargaining demands for 2021. The unions are calling for a EUR 90 increase for all workers and a minimum salary of EUR 850 a month. They also want action to improve career development and the revocation of the SIADAP performance management system.
Nurses' union demonstrates over careers, pay and promotion
The SEP nurses' union organised a protest outside the prime minister's office on 8 October as part of its long-running campaign to secure improvements to the system of career development and promotion. The union wants to see promotion opportunities unfrozen and on the basis of a range of measures that, among other things, properly recognise past work experience. The union also has several specific demands on classification of certain jobs. The union argues that these measures are even more important than any promise of bonuses. EPSU sent a message of solidarity.
