The CNV public service union is calling for health employers and the government to join in an information campaign highlighting the increasing violence against ambulance workers. The call comes following an attack on an ambulance worker in Amsterdam at the weekend. The union argues that the campaign should explain how ambulance workers often need time to treat people urgently where they are rather than just rushing them to hospital.

Union analysis reveals extent of violence against ambulance workers
Information gathered by the GMB trade union shows that the number of violent attacks on ambulance workers in the UK increased by 34% between 2012/13 and 2016/17 with a total of 14,441 physical assaults against ambulance workers over that period. The figures are published in the GMB's new report, In Harm’s Way: Confronting Violence Against NHS Ambulance Staff, providing arguments for the union's campaign to have special legislation aimed at protecting emergency service workers.
Ambulance workers re-launch campaign with work-to-rule
In a number of key cities, ambulance workers, members of the FNV trade union, re-launched their campaign over understaffing and overwork with a work-to-rule. The workers will strictly abide by all relevant rules and regulations related to working time, working conditions and patient hygiene to demonstrate to employers how they are normally forced to cut corners because of the enormous pressure they are under to attend emergencies. The union says that with current staffing levels it is impossible to achieve target response times. See also epsucob@NEWS 02, January 2018 and 21, November 2017.
International union campaign against gender-based violence
International union organisations are promoting a major campaign against gender-based violence, a key aim of which is to get the International Labour Organisation to adopt a new convention. Launched on 14 February, the 23 days of action are building critical support for the adoption of a convention, accompanied by a Recommendation, on “Violence and Harassment against Women and Men in the World of Work”, with a strong focus on the gender dimension of violence. The campaign is also mobilising and strengthening trade union action in eradicating gender-based violence from the world of work.
