With over a year gone since the collective agreement covering municipal workers expired, the FNV Abvakabo public services union is planning a series of actions leading up to a national strike on 18 June. Demonstrations are planned for 1 and 19 May as well as 2 June. The union is looking for a 2.5% pay rise for 2013 and 3% for 2014 and argues that increasing pay for the 175000 workers in the sector will provide an important boost to the economy.

Unions build for firefighters' strike on 18 June
The three main union organisations for firefighters (FP CGIL, FNS CISL and UIL PA) called a press conference for 30 May to highlight their main demands in the lead up to national strike action on 18 June. Among their main concerns are the lack of a pay increase since 2008, the shortage of staff, increasing casualisation, lack of funding and the failure to recognise firefighting as an arduous occupation, which is important in relation to pension rights. Municipal employers targeted on 18 June
Thousands of members of FNV Abvakabo and CNV Publieke Zaak trade unions from local government joined a demonstration in the town of Hendrik Ido Andacht on 18 June. Their target was the congress of the VNG municipal employers' organisation. After 18 months without a renewed collective agreement and no progress in negotiations the unions are stepping up their campaign. There was also strike action by municipal workers in Amsterdam, Groningen and Utrecht on 16, 17 and 18 June and the unions say more industrial action may follow unless the employers return to the negotiating table. Public sector unions gradually build up strike action
Several trade unions in the public sector are involved in strike action that began on Thursday 24 May after attempts at mediation in pay negotiations failed. The unions involved are coordinating their action and gradually increasing the number of workers coming out on strike. At the centre of the dispute are the unions’ efforts to ensure that pay increases in the public sector are in line with those in the private sector.
