After months of protests and strike action the Marburger Bund doctors' union is resuming talks with the regional government employers over pay and working hours. The key demands of the union include withdrawal of the employers' decision to cut holiday and Christmas payments which have cost doctors up 15-20% of their pay and to set out a strategy for doctors' income to rise by 30%.

After the second round of negotiations the regional government employers have still to set out a specific offer to the trade unions who are looking for a pay increase of 8%. The two sides have at least agreed that pay is the central issue and not working time as it was in 2006. Ver.di members have been taking part in a series of demonstrations and warning strikes across the regions to indicate the strength of support for the pay claim. Read more at > ver.di (DE)
The main public service federations have signed a preliminary agreement covering the 250000 staff in central government for the three-year period 2019-2021. After eight months of negotiations and 25 meetings, the agreement delivers an average pay increase of €90 a month backdated to 1 January 2021 in a deal worth around 5%. The agreement also covers a range of areas including remote work, parental leave, support for women who are victims of violence and new procedures covering progression through pay grades. The Marburger Bund doctors' union will resume negotiations with the regional government employers over a new collective agreement covering 22,000 doctors in university clinics. The most recent demonstration on 6 September in Stuttgart involved 5,000 doctors. Read more at > Marburger Bund
