Trade unions represented European Commission staff organized a rally on 9 November and have threatened strike action in response to European Commission plans to cut 5% of all staff, increase the working week and raise the retirement age. The EU staff unions are also angry that Member States are putting pressure on the Commission to cut staff pay rather than apply the agreed pay formula that links increases to the pay increases in eight Member States.

Health unions threaten strike action
Health unions are threatening strike action over the government's proposals to implement this year's pay increase in stages. Unions were angry in the first place that the increase this year is only 2.5% but were incensed when the government announced that they would get 1.5% this month (April) and the remaining 1% in November (consumer prices rose by 3.1% in the year to March but retail prices, still used in most pay negotiations rose by 4.8% over the year). Ver.di threatens strike action at EON
The ver.di services says it may resort to strike action in response to the threat of large-scale job cuts at the EON energy company. Up to 11,000 of the company’s 79,000 global workforce could go and ver.di wants to negotiate a job security agreement that would exclude compulsory redundancies after 2012. Sven Bergelin, ver.di official and chair of EPSU’s utilities standing committee said that workers were particularly angered by EON’s plans as the company was making good profits.
