Confederations try to protect collective agreements

Croatia

Four trade union confederations have been in negotiations with the government in order to prevent changes to the labour code that would undermine collective agreements. The confederations called for urgent talks when it emerged that the government was trying to implement the change to the labour code without any consultation with the unions. The unions are also trying to win broader support and are collecting signatures for a petition to have a referendum on the labour code changes.

Water workers try flash action over collective agreement

Hundreds of employees of water companies joined a flash action January 17 in defence of decent pay in the sector. The workers are calling for salary guarantees to continue to apply in any new collective agreement. Three quarters of employees have a certain salary guarantee, which comes from previous wage agreements with regional water companies. Around 5,000 water workers have been without a collective agreement since August and are concerned that they will lose out in a new agreement which could mean a reduction of income of on average €550. Minister tries to block care sector minimum wage

Services union ver.di has reacted angrily to attempts by economics minister Rainer Brüderle of the FDP to block the introduction of a minimum wage to cover the 800,000 workers in the care sector. Ver.di had already managed to get agreement from the employers for minimum rates of €8.50 an hour in the West and €7.50 an hour in the East. Before the intervention of Brüderle, CDU labour minister Ursula von Leyen had indicated that it would be possible to implement legislation soon so that the rates could be in force from 1 July. Union attacks care organisation for trying to outlaw strikes and protests

The GPA-djp private services union has strongly attacked the VKKJ organisation that provides care to disabled children for using an injunction to try to prevent its works councils from organising any kind of strike or protest to secure improvements in pay and conditions. The VKKJ has not signed up to the social services sector agreement and the works councils had successfully campaigned to bring pay at the organisation in line with that agreement but that's when VKKJ took the legal step.
