Union ballots members for strike action

The IMPACT public services union is balloting all its 55,000 members to secure backing for industrial action in response to continuing threats to cut pay and jobs. The union says it will only use a strike mandate if public service employers move to impose compulsory redundancies, unilateral cuts in working hours, further pay cuts or reductions in pension entitlements. Meanwhile the ICTU trade union confederation has called a national demonstration against government policies on 6 November and the SIPTU general union will be seeking further support from its members for industrial action in support of the national cross-sectoral agreement.

Members balloted on municipal pay offer

Denmark

Members of the FOA union, covering health, eldercare and childcare workers employed by the municipalities, are being balloted over a revised pay offer after three weeks on strike. While the general municipal settlement provides for a 12.8% pay increase over three years, workers represented by FOA will get 13.4%. The result of the ballot will be known on 29 May. A central element of the dispute was the issue of the undervaluing of occupations dominated by women workers. The strike by members of the DNO nurses' association continues.

Public service unions to ballot members over strike action on 30 November

A public sector-wide strike over pensions could take place on 30 November as several major trade unions agree to ballot their members over industrial action. Government proposals to change several public sector schemes is meeting serious resistance as unions express their anger of the imposition of higher retirement ages and increases in employee contributions, despite evidence that such measures are not necessary to fund the schemes.
