The ETUC is asking for views on the impact of the 2002 European Directive on equal treatment of men and women so that it can feed them to the European Commission. It wants information on positive and negative experiences in the implementation process and the way social partners were or were not involved. It also would like to know whether the implementation has helped to promote social dialogue between social partners with a view to fostering equal treatment; an obligation to encourage social partners to promote equality between men and women; and an obligation to encourage employers to promote equal treatment for men and women in the workplace in a planned and systematic way. Please also send any views you might have on the application of the Directive and in particular its provisions on pregnancy and maternity, harassment and sexual harassment, assistance to victims of discrimination and equality bodies established by/via the Directive. Gas engineers start overtime ban to get equal treatment
Gas engineers at National Grid voted overwhelmingly in support of an overtime ban in support of their claim for shift workers’ overtime pay to be the same as that paid to National Grid’s electricity workers. National Grid runs both the electricity and gas transmission networks and a process of harmonisation of terms and conditions between gas and electricity engineers began in 2005 but the Prospect trade union says that workers are angry that the process has taken so long. Equal treatment ruling on part-time workers' pay while training
The Equal Treatment Commission has ruled that part-time workers should be fully paid for any work-related training they do. The case involved a part timer covered by the care sector agreement who worked 16 hours a week as a care assistant but who undertook a training course of 28.8 hours a week. The Commission agreed with the trade union that payment should be on the basis of the 28.8 hours and not on the basis of a special rate for trainees in the collective agreement.
