The GÖD public service union has renewed its call for government action over the pay and training of health and social care workers. The union says that along with extra funding for 24-hour care the government should ensure that workers have proper training and that care workers should no longer be left alone to look after older people without the necessary training. The union argues that both care workers and the people they care for need the protection of proper training and that a better paid job with formal qualifications will help attract the much needed additional workers that are required for 24-hour care.

Services union ver.di has joined with other organisations in the social care sector to campaign for decent care. As well as calling for increased funding for the sector, the campaign will also focus on the need for decent pay for care workers and proper professional recognition of the work they do. Call for proper training for care workers
The vida services union used 12 May – national carers’ day – to stress the need to establish a proper training framework for 24-hour care. The union, which has drafted its own proposals on training, points out that people expect trained mechanics to work on their cars, but currently there is no requirement for those caring for the elderly and vulnerable to have any kind of training. The union also argues that recruitment to the sector needs to be improved and an important factor is having clearly organised shift planning so that workers know in advance when they are on duty and are not forced
