Turkey: Report of the Council of Europe – disproportionate government response. And ETUC action plan

(27 January 2017) The Council of Europe’s Political Affairs committee discussed the situation in Turkey 25 January 2017. On the basis of a detailed report of an ad hoc committee it adopted a statement in which it:

- underlined the disproportionality of the government response to the failed coup of 15 July 2016 including the dismissal of ten thousands of public service workers

- stressed the impact on the freedom of the media

- criticizes the lifting of the immunity of some 154 MPs and detention of a dozen of MPs

- expresses concerns on the ongoing constitutional reform

The ETUC Executive Committee adopted a resolution on the situation in Turkey at its last Executive Committee. It includes an action programme to support the unions and workers dismissed.
