(15 May 2012) EPSU has joined the Global Campaign to end immigration detention of children, launched by the International Detention Coalition on 21 March 2012 condemning the use of detention as a common migration management tool.
This campaign focuses on child detention by promoting stories of children and parents from all over the world who have experienced or been impacted by immigration detention.
Key aims of the campaign are both to spread the stories of those children who have suffered the impact of such a policy and to continue engaging with governments both at the UN and national levels on alternatives to child detention.

“The Coalition’s report based on interviews of children and insights from professionals shows that alternatives to detention exist. These work best when they are based on an integrated approach of well-resourced public services including good legal advice, interpretation and social and health support. It is essential that these alternatives become the rule rather than the exception. Children’s well being and best interest should never be compromised.” said Carola Fischbach-Pyttel, EPSU general secretary.
The EPSU 2009 Congress Resolution on migration took a clear stance against the detention of migrants who have committed no crime.
EPSU expresses its support for this initiative and calls for respecting children’s rights in Europe, and indeed outside, whatever their status, migrants or not, for the interest of the children, their families and society at large.
