IMPACT is balloting its 25,000 members in the health service over possible industrial action in protest at new restrictions on staffing in the health service. Local health service organisations no longer have discretion to replace workers who have resigned or who go on maternity leave. This can now only be authorised by a central unit. The union is also planning a special conference on 7 February to debate a range of pressures facing the health service including cuts in jobs and accelerating privatisation.

The PCS civil service union is balloting 70,000 members in the Revenue and Customs department over possible strike action in opposition to further cuts in jobs. The government's efficiency programme will mean the closure of 250 offices and cutting 25,000 jobs by 2011. The GMB general workers’ union is balloting its membership at Thames Water over industrial action in protest at the company’s plans to cut jobs and outsource some call-centre services to India. Public sector unions to ballot for strike action over jobs and pensions
At its annual conference this week, the PCS civil service union agreed to ballot members over a national strike over job cuts and in protest at government proposals for public sector pension reform. Public sector workers are facing the prospect of their pension contributions rising by 3% of pay and teaching and lecturing unions are also planning ballots over action. Other unions may also consider balloting with the prospect of a nationwide public sector strike.
