Utility unions fight privatisation in Ukraine, Georgia, Baltic states

Municipalities and governments advocate privatisation as the miracle solution to ageing and decaying infra-structures, unions reported to a PSI European sectoral meeting of utility unions. The problem of lacking investment and low collection rates is recognised by the trade unions, but privatisation is not seen as the solution. Governments and political parties need to behave responsible and not promise citizens that essential services come for free. Lack of investment has an impact on workers and on the quality of the service provided.

The EPSU Deputy General Secretary and Sven Bergelin, President of the EPSU Standing Committee Utilities presented EPSU's work in the area of the utilities.

The above meeting was followed by the PSI North East European Constituency.

The Services Directive was an important issue as the outcome of the debates will also affect workers in the Ukraine and other European Neighbourhoods countries. Unions discussed the PSI programme of activities, the EPSU work and problems confronting them including organising workers.
