ESPU sends lettter to Romanian Prime Minister

EPSU sent this letter to Emil Bloc: Mr. Emil BLOC Prime Minister 1 Victoriei Plazza, District 1 , Bucharest Romania

Brussels, 23 December 2010

Dear Sir,

Like so many workers and citizens in Romania, we were shocked by the news and pictures of a public sector employee, who works as an electrician for the national TV station and who threw himself from the balcony of the Parliament hall in which the last meeting of the parliament was taking place. This unfortunate event took place during your speech in which you defended the salary cuts announced for next year.

The gesture shows how desperate people can be when they are not listened to and when they become the scapegoats for failed policies and wrong choices.

Romania has seen extraordinary levels of protests against your government's policies, but such protests have been ignored.

We sincerely hope that the desperate act of the father of two will not be in vain and that your government will enter into a real dialogue with the unions, to find alternatives to the current policies. That would announce a good start of the New Year for millions of people in Romania.

Yours sincerely, Jan Willem Goudriaan

EPSU Deputy General Secretary
