Public sector health workers in Italy are still trying to get their collective agreement renewed 25 months after it expired. A planned sit-in outside the Ministry of Health has been called off in the light of further negotiations but if progress is not made then a 24-hour strike is planned for 13 February and a 48-hour strike on 27-28 February.

Unions representing workers in the private health sector have agreed to a day's strike action and national demonstration on 11 May. The unions are trying to get the 2004-2005 collective agreement implemented and decided on the action following three regional demonstrations in Milan on 20 March, Bari on 24 March and Rome on 5 April. The ADEDY public sector and GSEE private sector confederations have called a further day of strike action for 23 February. The confederations are continuing their campaigns of resistance against the policies implemented by the government and called for by the European Commission and International Monetary Fund. Along with attacks on the pay and pensions of public sector workers, ADEDY and GSEE are also protesting against changes in the law that are undermining collective bargaining and collective agreements. The ADEDY public services confederation and the GSEE private sector confederation have called a general strike for 4 February in protest at further measures proposed by the government to implement the bail-out agreement. In this case ADEDY is focusing on more deep cuts to the pension system which has suffered many reforms over recent years.
