Public sector federations call for €150 pay increase

The main public service federations - Fp-Cgil, Cisl-Fp, Uil-Fpl and Uil-Pa - have called on the government to relaunch collective bargaining and negotiate a €150 pay rise for public service workers. The four federations are threatening a general strike if the government does not respond positively. The unions argue that after more than five years of a freeze on public sector bargaining, workers need a pay increase in recognition of their skills and professionalism. The unions also maintain that the public sector needs to be recognised for the role it plays in the economy.

€150 per month demand in municipal hospitals

The public services union ver.di is calling for a monthly payment of €150 for all employees in municipal hospitals. The union argues that higher public transport and fuel costs have combined with a change to federal taxation on travel costs to make it more expensive for people to get to work and the monthly lump sum will compensate for this. Ver.di is also calling on the municipal hospitals to abide by the public sector collective agreement. Federation calls for wage increases to boost demand

The FES-CCOO services federation is calling for an increase in wages as part of a strategy to boost demand and create jobs. The union warns that with inflation down to 0.7% the country is at risk of a deflationary slump and there needs to be a concerted effort to win back the loss in real pay suffered since the crisis. In terms of the public services the federation wants to see an unfreezing of pay and recruitment, factors which have threatened the quality of services. The federation remains unconvinced of the Juncker investment plan and argues that something more substantial, like the ETUC 10
