Strike by Social Assistance Agency employees

Members of the PK Admin trade union employed by the Social Assistance Agency took strike action on 9 July in support of demands for a 20% pay increase and improvements to other working conditions. The union argues that many workers in the Agency are paid close to the minimum wage and on average much below workers in other government departments. The union will consider further action if the government doesn't come up with an appropriate offer.

Driving agency workers take strike action

Around 2,000 employees at the government's Driving Standards Agency are taking strike action (17 July) over job cuts. A consultants' report recommended a reorganisation of the Agency with the closure of a number of centres and 80 job cuts. PCS union members are angry about the cutbacks which they say will threaten service quality and maintain that the Agency has begun implementing the consultants' recommendations without any consultation with the union. Security agency staff announce strike action

Public sector cuts have even had an impact on intelligence and security staff with strike action announced for 6 December. The union representing staff in the agency say the dispute is over poor pay and working conditions as well as the need for increased employment in the agency, the evaluation of posts and implementation of social dialogue.

Waste contractor sacks striking employees

The waste contractor HCS has sacked 50 refuse collectors after losing a number of its municipal contracts in the Copenhagen area. The workers had been on strike for three weeks over their working conditions. Despite being sacked they have been continuing their action against the company, picketing the HCS waste disposal units in Glostrup and on the island of Amager. Union activist Ronni Larsen was arrested on one of the latest demonstrations.
