Low paid worse affected by cutbacks

The JHL public sector union reports that temporary lay-offs are on the increase, with employees affected in some 20 municipalities and new plans for similar measures are reported every week. Municipalities are also trying to save money by attempting to remove the holiday bonus pay for holidays, offering unpaid holidays instead and privatising services. The union warns that those hit hardest are those with the lowest income, the majority of whom are women and so this is also a question of equality.

Budget to hit low paid workers

The government reaction to the latest banking crisis in Ireland is another budget with deep cuts across welfare and other public services. Tax rises and cuts in the minimum wage will hit low paid workers in general while new public sector workers (those taken on despite the recruitment freeze) will be on starting pay 25% lower than two years ago. Low paid non-teaching staff in schools in particular will be hit with 5% pay cuts next year. Ver.di is highlighting the very poor pay and working conditions suffered by many in health and social care. The union argues that a qualified, full-time care worker should be on a salary of at least €3000 but average pay is more like €2410 while those in elder care are on an average of only €2190. This compares to an average salary across all sectors of €3462. A big problem in the care sector is that many employers are not signed up to collective agreements and so the possibility to extend coverage of collective agreement is very important.
