Workers at hospitals run by religious orders in the Upper Austria region have taken strike action after a completely unacceptable pay offer from the employers. The vida services union says that the 10,000 workers employed by the hospitals have seen pay fall behind inflation over the past three years and the current offer would be an effective pay cut as the employers want to reduce payments for on-call time and overtime. The union reports a positive reaction from patients but attempts by the employers to take action against strikers and even bring in other workers to break the strike.

Strike action to hit private hospitals as public sector unions take action
The SEP nurses’ union has called for a day of strike action on 16 March in the private hospitals that are part of the APHP employers’ organisation. The main demands include a 35-hour week for all, a pay increase of 10% and similar increases on allowances, 25 days’ paid leave a year, improved unsocial hours payments and a higher meal allowance. Public sector unions in the Frente Comum are also continuing their campaign for better pay with a strike in public administration on 17 March and national demonstration on the 18th.
Union takes action over hospital staffing
(January 2017) Services union ver.di coordinated a warning strike in all 21 hospitals in the Saarland region as part of a campaign to negotiate agreements with the hospital employers to deal with overwork and understaffing. The union will be meeting with employers in February to discuss the situation but has warned that further action will follow if the employers refuse to get involved in meaningful negotiations. A major demonstration is planned for International Women's Day on 8 March.
