Three public service trade unions - CGT, FSU and Solidaires - have called a day of action, involving strikes, on 31st January. The protest is to put pressure on the government to stop job cuts in the public sector and to agree an across-the-board pay increase for all public sector workers. The unions point out that nearly a million civil servants and public sector employees are on pay rates close to the national minimum wage.

The Fp Cgil, Cisl Fp and Uil Fpl public service federations have declared a day of strike action and protests on 31 January in their continuing campaign to secure a bridging agreement with the ARIS non-profit health employers’ association. ARIS has rejected the proposal that aims to provide a basis for negotiations to start that would lead to a collective agreement that covers both the ARIS and AIOP private health employer organisations. Eight public sector federations are planning mobilisations across the country on 31 May that will include strikes and demonstrations. The unions are calling for a public-sector wide increase in pay. The government has frozen pay and has said there will be no general pay rise for another two years. At the same time it claims that other changes in pay mean that many individual public sector workers will see their pay increase. The unions challenge this saying that even with these changes in pay, workers overall are still losing out in terms of purchasing power and have seen their take-home pay
