Public sector unions gradually build up strike action

Several trade unions in the public sector are involved in strike action that began on Thursday 24 May after attempts at mediation in pay negotiations failed. The unions involved are coordinating their action and gradually increasing the number of workers coming out on strike. At the centre of the dispute are the unions’ efforts to ensure that pay increases in the public sector are in line with those in the private sector.

Municipal workers build up to strike action on 18 June

Netherlands

With over a year gone since the collective agreement covering municipal workers expired, the FNV Abvakabo public services union is planning a series of actions leading up to a national strike on 18 June. Demonstrations are planned for 1 and 19 May as well as 2 June. The union is looking for a 2.5% pay rise for 2013 and 3% for 2014 and argues that increasing pay for the 175000 workers in the sector will provide an important boost to the economy. Action on pay building up over autumn

U.K.

Public sector workers across the UK are either preparing for or voting on strike action on pay. Local government workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland already have date for the second day of strike action on 14 October. Meanwhile, local government workers in Scotland and workers across the health service are being balloted for strike action. Non-teaching staff in academy schools are also being balloted for action. The push for higher pay across all sectors is being supported by the TUC confederation which has called a national demonstration for 18 October. [Read more at > Unison->http

Public sector unions build for general strike

Public sector unions are building for the general strike supported by both union confederations on 14 November. A national demonstration over the latest budget proposals was organised on 31 October and the STAL local government union is supporting a campaigning caravan of protest that is working its way around the country.
