Workers reject pay offer in waste sector

Members of both the FNV Abvakabo and CNV Publieke Zaak trade unions have overwhelmingly rejected the pay offer from employers in the environmental and waste sector. During the negotiations the employers had proposed a 24-month deal with an overall increase of 3.5% but then came up with a last-minute offer of 2.5% over 19 months. Negotiators in both trade unions had recommended rejection of the offer. The two unions are now seeking to re-open negotiations.

The CC.OO union federation has refused to endorse the agreement for the 2006 pay increase in the public sector. The basic increase for the public sector for 2006 negotiated in the summer was for 3.1%. Since then unions have negotiated an extra 0.3% for central government and 0.5% for local government. The CC.OO points out that in 2005 public sector workers lost out with a 3.0% pay increase while inflation rose to 3.5% by October 2005. The union also says the government has tried to confuse the negotiations over pay by mixing them up with discussions over other issues such as work-life balance

Health workers reject 3% pay offer

Consultations by health unions have revealed overwhelming majorities in favour of rejecting the 3% pay offer from the government that would cover National Health Service workers across England and Wales. Over eight in 10 and even nine in 10 in some unions were opposed to the deal with several unions also indicating that a majority of their members were in favour of some form of industrial action.
