Nearly three in four state sector workers report an increase in workloads while there have been work reorganisations in nine out of 10 workplaces. These are among the main findings of Pardia’s latest membership survey, based on responses from over 2,500 employees. The survey shows continuing concerns about job security and an increase in pressure of work, stress from unfinished work and mental fatigue.

The CFDT Santé health federation has carried out a major survey with responses from 55,000 workers in 492 public health establishments. The survey reveals a range of data on working conditions and has been broken down into different groups of workers and professions. The PCS civil service union has highlighted the results of a survey that reveals low levels of satisfaction with pay across many government departments. In some parts of the Ministry of Justice, for example, only 12%-14% of workers were satisfied with their pay and only 21% in HMRC, the third largest government department, that deals with taxation. Dissatisfaction was even greater when workers were asked to compare their jobs with similar jobs elsewhere, reflecting the fact that the 1% pay cap remains in the civil service but has been lifted in other parts of the public sector. A survey by the Lower Austrian Chamber of Labour reveals the extent to which health workers’ well-being is under threat from stress and long hours. The survey of around 33,000 employees found one in five were emotionally exhausted while 27% worked 12-14 hours a day. Some 40% of employees worked more than 40 hours a week even though only 1% had agreed to work such long hours. One in four new jobs are in the health sector and there are around 6,000 vacancies nationwide.
