Unions plan further action on social services workers' pay

Nine trade union organisations are working together to improve the pay and conditions of the predominantly female workforce in a range of social service occupations. The unions believe that demonstrations on 16 March were crucial in getting the CSFPT committee responsible for local and regional government to withdraw plans to maintain a range of social service occupations in the B pay grade. Unions are calling for proper recognition of workers’ qualifications in the sector and for jobs to be moved up to the A salary grade. A further day of action is planned for 7 April.

Ambulance workers plan further action

Netherlands

The FNV union is planning a new round of actions in the ambulance sector as it continues its long-running campaign to improve pay and conditions and address excessive workloads. The union has called on the employers to negotiate a plan with concrete measures including a commitment to a specific deadline to deal with staff shortages; reducing overtime and additional work; complying with the collective agreement in relation to breaks and the reduction of external hiring and subcontracting; and an agreement to increase salaries in line with other parts of the health sector.

Further protest action planned by public service union

Portugal

The STAL public service union is planning to maintain its protest and campaigning activities into the new year following the general strike against austerity measures in November. In particular, the union wants to organize a month of protest in February in opposition to public sector cuts and attacks on public sector workers pay and conditions and trade union rights. Nurses plan further action

Ireland

The INO nurses' union and Psychiatric Nurses' Association are planning to continue action in support of their claim for higher pay and shorter working hours. The unions expressed disappointment that health service employers failed to respond to the unions' willingness to negotiate over far-reaching modernisation as part of a deal over working time. Meanwhile the SIPTU general union confirms its support for the claim for shorter working hours although it is not involved in the current industrial action.
