Employers in the nursing home and care sector have broken off negotiations with the unions with failure to agree over pay and the personal budget scheme as well as maternity improvements, flexibility and training. Unions were looking at achieving an increase of around 3.5% over two years with the employers offering only 2.5%. Trade union action in support of the collective bargaining claim has been going on over recent workers and further action is planned. The unions argue that the employers are missing a good opportunity to make working in the sector more attractive and so tackle recruitment problems.

The Fagforbundet municipal union has broken off negotiations over a new two-year agreement with the church employers. A key matter for dispute is over pay for workers with 20 years’ service and the union says that the employers’ current offer would leave this group of workers around €885 a year worse off than workers with 20 years’ service covered by similar collective agreements. The unions argue that the employers' offer is inadequate, fails to address inequalities in pay and that the employers want too much of any pay increase to be awarded at local level. Public sector negotiations break down
The fifth round of negotiations between unions and employers in the federal and local government sectors broke down as the employers sought to link a deal on pay with an increase in working time. Ver.di was very pleased at the level of support for a second round of warning strikes from 4-6 March that included airports. The failure of the latest round of negotiations has led to the dispute now being referred to an arbitration committee that will report before the next round of bargaining gets underway on 29 March.
