The GDG public service union has welcome an initiative from the Austrian employment service to subsidise jobs in local government in response to rising unemployment but said that many questions need to be resolved first. The union stressed that the scheme should be voluntary and should not be used as a way of undermining pay in the sector. Above all the union said that it should be involved in negotiations over the scheme.

Cross-sectoral negotiations break down
National negotiations over a framework for pay increases over the next two years broke down at the beginning of October and now collective bargaining will continue at sectoral level. The EK private business federation and KT local government employers offered a 2.4% pay increase for 13 months and 1.9% for the following 12 months. Union welcomes initiative on home care
The FOA has welcomed the setting up of a commission to examine home care provision. The union argues strongly that the quality and dignity of care need to be at the centre of the commission’s considerations. Above all FOA will be urging the commission to take full account of the contribution of thousands of health and social care professionals to the quality of home care and shift the focus away from the obsession with cutting costs that has been the primary approach of many municipalities in recent years.
