Federation attacks increase in precarious employment

Trade unions are concerned that recent proposals from the government will increase precarious employment. The government wants to make it easier to employ workers on temporary contracts, changing the law to remove any justification for them. At the moment employers have to indicate that they are using temporary contracts to fill staffing shortfalls. Other changes would extend probationary periods when new workers can be sacked for no reason and reduce periods during which redundant workers can be offered jobs by their former employer. EPSU - SEPWorkers, mainly nurses, at a 24-hour health helpline are taking action to protect their pay and improve their employment conditions. The workers have not had proper employment contracts, being effectively self-employed, and now face the sack for resisting a massive cut in pay. The service is being run jointly by Portuguese and French communication companies. Some of the workers are represented by the SEP nurses' union, part of the CGTP-IN trade union confederation.
