(20 June 2018) The European Commission last February published the draft of the Drinking Water Directive in which, for the first time, there is a direct reference to the first ever successful European Citizens Initiative (Right2Water). After 5 years of putting pressure on the European Commission, it decided to listen to the nearly 1.9 million European citizens that demanded the Human right to water as defined by the United Nations in 2010 to be recongnised at the European level. At the time we welcomed the European commission’s step toward the right direction, especially provisions in art. 13 of the recast directive (see our press release in EN - ES - FR - IT - GR).
Next Monday, 25th June, the Council of the European Union (Ministers of Environment) is discussing the European Commission’s proposal. The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), many of its affiliates and many more of the civil society organisations that constitutes the European Water Movement have been demanding to the different governments to take into account their demands. The very many letter from almost all countries of the European Union – asking Governments to support the new provisions on the Human Right to water - show that this is a wide and comprehensive movement pushing for a different agenda. The European Commission has finally listened to us, it is time now for the Member States to do so. In that sense a petition has been sent from the Right2water website.
