EPSU organises a seminar on Health and Safety in the waste industry. This is an issue that has been neglected for some time. However on average the number of incidents in the waste industry is relatively high and the nature of the job (handling waste) brings bigger risks to health and safety of workers compared to other industries.

Also the waste industry is facing changes in structure and working patterns due to globalisation and higher demands for re-use and recycling of waste. The focus in the industry is shifting from disposal (“how to get rid of waste”) to re-use (“how to regain the most of the resources in waste”).

We think it is good to pay attention to the health and safety situation at this moment, because changes in working pattern should not endanger health and safety of workers. We will look at the situation in different companies and areas within the waste industry.

To promote changes in working environment and behaviour different measures are needed varying from information, incentives and regulation. Therefore we think cooperation between workers and management is indispensable and dialogue is a prerequisite for lasting and better results.
