The EIRO industrial relations observatory reports that hourly paid hospital staff have taken strike action in order to enforce their right to move from a six-day to a five-day week. A collective agreement for 2004-2006 included a provision to reduce working hours for these workers but has yet to be put into effect.

Around 2,400 members of the PCS civil service union took two days’ of strike action in protest at call targets set by management. The employees work for the Job Centre Plus part of the Department of Work and Pensions and they argue that the targets put them under excessive pressure while failing to take account of the level of service provided to enquirers who may have serious worries about their welfare benefits. Ver.di members at the Charité university hospital in Berlin have voted overwhelmingly (96%) for all-out strike action calling simply for increased staffing. Union members at the hospital have been warning for a long time of the critical situation and the union has been calling for an agreement on minimum staffing levels since 2013. The hospital management claims that minimum staffing is a political issue and more staff required extra funding. Hospital doctors protested against changes to the arrangements for how they are appointed and to linking their pay to performance. The 24-hour stoppage took place from 18.30 on 11 May. The FO union is concerned about the implications of the new salary arrangements particularly with many hospitals in financial difficulty.
