Nine unions back pensions strike

Members of nine local government trade unions have voted to back a national one-day strike on 28 March. This could be followed by selective action at regional and local level. The unions are protesting at government proposals to remove the 85 rule from the local government pension scheme. This rule allows members to retire early on a full pension if their age and length of service add up to 85. The unions point out that the local government scheme is the only one in the public sector facing this kind of reduction in benefits and 75% of its members are women workers, many of them on the lowest pay rates.

Nine trade unions organising in the public services - CGT, CFDT, FO, UNSA, FSU, Solidaires, CFE-CGT, CFTC and FA-FP - have stated that they will continue to oppose the measures that are set to be implemented by the law on transforming the public sector that was voted through by the Senate on 23 July. The unions argue that the legislation will make it more difficult for them to protect workers' interests as it will weaken joint administrative committees and abolish committees dealing with health and safety and working conditions. Nine trade union organisations coordinate demands on jobs and pay

Nine public service federations - CGT, CFDT, FO, UNSA, FSU, Solidaires, FA-FP, CFE-CGC and CFTC - are continuing to work together in their campaign to defend jobs and services across the public sector and secure better pay and conditions for public sector workers. They are planning to rally outside the ministries of finance and public services at midday on 27 June, a few days before a meeting on pay planned for 2 July where the unions will be calling for salaries that recognise the work, skills, qualifications and commitment of public service workers.

Government offer on pensions not enough as more unions back strike action

The Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) is one of the latest public sector unions to vote in support of strike action over pensions on 30 November. The coalition government has made some concessions but unions still argue that they have failed to address the fact that most public sector workers will be working longer and paying more for a lower pension. Unison has also vigorously responded to attacks on the level of turnout in the ballots.
