EPSU has sent solidarity greetings to its health affiliate FSSHK. The union joins other public sector unions in a general strike protesting against the government's failure to implement the General Collective Agreement of 2014 and the wage law of 2010. EPSU has also sent letters to the country's president and prime minister urging them to respond to the unions' demands and begin negotiations over pay.
The one-day public sector strike on 26 October, initially called by trade unions in the Frente Comum linked to the CGTP confederation has also received support from trade unions in the UGT confederation. The striking unions have a broad range of demands including increases to pay and pensions, ensuring the 35-hour week covers all public service workers, measures to tackle staff shortages and to improve health and safety and action to strengthen collective bargaining and that collective agreements are correctly applied.
The ADEDY public sector confederation joined the GSEE private sector confederation in strike action on 10 December in protest at a range of government policies including cuts to pensions and undermining legal rights to collective agreements. The strike caused widespread disruption across the country which was still being hit by a wave of protests over the shooting of a student by police. The conflict in the health sector has lead to strike action by doctors, joined also by the main health union. The unions are calling for a postponement or abandonment of plans to change the coefficients on which salaries are based that would lead to a 10% cut in pay. Read more at > news website (EN)
