The three local government trade unions - Unison, GMB and Unite - are continuing their campaign for better pay in the sector and have called a day of protest for 4 February. Local government pay has lost 18% of its purchasing power since 2010 with a pay freeze between 2010 and 2012 and only a 1% increase in 2013. Over half a million municipal workers now earn less than the "living wage" that is calculated as £7.65 (€9.30) an hour.

Municipal union plans strike action over pay
The Kommunal local government union, representing mainly nurses and blue-collar workers in health, cleaning and catering is planning a campaign of industrial action beginning on 29 April. A pay increase of 6.8% over three years is on the table in line with developments in industry. However, Kommunal wants a flat-rate increase of 1740 SEK (€205) as a way of providing lower paid workers with a higher increase. Union action on pay on day of culture
The KKDSZ culture workers' union has launched a petition highlighting low pay in the sector and plans to hand it to the minister of human resources on 22 January, the national day of culture. The union will highlight the contradiction of government claims that national culture is important while failing to increase pay for museum, library and other culture workers for over 10 years or engage in proper collective bargaining. The union is planning a number of events in Budapest and other cities. EPSU send a message of solidarity.
Unions mobilise for day of action on pay
The STAL trade union and other federations in the CGPT-IN confederation took part in strikes and protests on 9 February in support of their claims for increased pay and other improvements to working conditions. For STAL this was part of series of actions in the first half of February. The SEP nurses organisation also joined the action on the 9th which fell in the middle of a series of strikes being carried out by the union to support its demands for improvements to career development in the health service.
