Welcome for legal change on sickness while on holiday

The FOA public services union has congratulated the government on changing working time legislation to ensure that workers who fall ill while on paid leave are entitled to take more paid leave to cover this period of sickness. This should have been implemented as long ago as 2004 but the law only applied when workers fell ill before the paid leave started. The union criticised previous governments for failing to deal with the issue to the detriment of thousands of workers.

Unions oppose cuts to sick pay

Trade unions representing ambulance workers - Unison and the GMB - have rejected the decision by NHS employers in England to change sick pay arrangements that could lead to cuts of up to 25% for some workers. The employers imposed the change on 1 September arguing that it brought ambulance workers in line with other groups in the health service. The unions argue that ambulance workers have long had different employment conditions and have criticised the employers for their reluctance to negotiate on the issues. Union welcomes new legal provisions on full-time work

Public services union Delta has welcomed implementation of the amended Working Environment Act that ensures that employers give priority to full-time employment. The law requires that employers document any decision to hire workers on a part-time basis and to discuss issues relating to part-time employees with trade union representatives. The Labour Inspection Authority has powers to enforce compliance with the new regulations. The legislation means that part-time employees get preferential access to any extra shifts and to extend their hours before employers hire new employees or take on
