Large health sector strike in Northern Ireland

(18 December 2019) Healthcare services will be heavily disrupted today as paramedics, nurses, and other healthcare workers are going on strike. EPSU sent a message of solidarity to all its affiliates involved, NIPSA, RCN, UNISON and Unite.

The unions are demanding urgent action to tackle the injustice of pay rates of health workers in Northern Ireland falling being lower than those in the rest of the UK, and critically low staffing levels.

This marks the first ever strike of nurses in Northern Ireland, after previous industrial action which stopped short of a strike. Paramedics will take 24-hour strike action.

The action in Northern Ireland comes the day after action by health workers across France and other strikes and protests by several of our health affiliates in recent months which have all been about pay, workloads and staffing levels.

EPSU stands in full solidarity with all those protesting for pay justice and adequate staffing levels.

EPSU has sent a message of solidarity to the unions.
