Charlie Hebdo killings in France: an horrific act against freedom of expression

(7 January 2015) EPSU is deeply shocked by the brutal attack on workers of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and on the police protecting the journalists and other staff, Wednesday 7 January. EPSU joins the French affiliates, European police and journalist unions and others in condemning these gruesome acts of violence. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and co-workers of those killed and injured.

We express our solidarity with the journalists and staff of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo and of other media standing up for freedom of expression, of thought and freedom of parody, not just in France, but also in Europe and globally. When these freedoms are attacked by extremists, governments and others, journalists are often the first victims. We have great respect for those who defend and stand up for these core values, and who persist despite the threats and attacks.

We stand united with you and will continue the fight for democracy, freedom and social justice.
